Air or Sea? How to Choose the Right Shipping Option for Your Business

If you are new to importing from China, one of the first questions you will face is whether to ship by air or by sea. The answer really comes down to two main factors: how quickly you need your goods and how much you are shipping. However, understanding the nuances of each method can save you thousands of dollars and prevent major supply chain headaches.

When to Choose Air Freight
Air freight is the ultimate solution when time is money.
Express Air: With our Express Air option, your goods can be with you in as little as 1 to 3 days. This is perfect for urgent restocks, testing a new product in the market, or sending out samples to VIP clients.
Normal Air: If you have a bit more time, Normal Air takes 1 to 2 weeks and costs significantly less than Express. This is the sweet spot for mid-sized, high-value, or lightweight goods (like jewelry, smartwatches, or high-end apparel) where the cost of air freight is easily absorbed by the product’s profit margin.

Pro Tip: Air freight is priced based on “volumetric weight” (how much space the box takes up) rather than just actual weight. It is ideal for lightweight, compact items.

When to Choose Sea Freight
Sea freight is the undisputed champion for bulk orders and heavy, bulky items. It takes longer—usually 45 to 55 days from our Foshan warehouse to Ghana—but the economics are unbeatable. If you are bringing in large quantities of furniture, heavy machinery, building materials, or massive inventory restocks, the massive savings in shipping costs make the wait entirely worth it.

The Hybrid Approach
Don’t forget you can mix and match! Many smart importers use a hybrid strategy. They will ship a small batch of their newest products via Express Air to get them to market immediately, while the bulk of their inventory travels via Sea freight to keep overall costs down.

Whichever option you choose, our team is happy to help you weigh the cost against the timeline, calculate the volumetric weight, and make the right call for your specific business needs.
